A unique piece from the Laguiole en Aubrac forgeThe BEE-BACK is a simple, elegantly designed slip-joint pocket knife. It was designed by Pierre Martin, an exceptionally talented knife-maker from the Laguiole en Aubrac forge.It stands out for its distinctive shape. The locking mechanism is also quite interesting and intricate. The pretty bee at the end of the handle locks the blade in the closed position. When opened, the blade lifts slightly out of the guard. The handle scales are crafted from vividly grained, stabilised plan tree. The guard has been intricately hand-guilloché.The blade is made from high-performance, rust-resistant 14C28N steel. The Laguiole en Aubrac logo is laser-engraved onto the blade. Even though it wasn't designed to be an Army knife, it quickly gained acceptance in Emperor William's army. This was also the time that created the name "Emperor William Knife". Today, it is used worldwide and distinguishes itself with its narrow, rugged design in everyday life. For over 100 years, this simple yet extremely robust pocket knife has been manufactured virtually unchanged.It was formerly produced at the famous Solingen cutlery workshop ‘Mercator’-Indiawerk Heinrich Kaufmann & Söhne.Since 1995, the company OTTER has taken over production of the MERCATOR knife; the Indiawerk company no longer exists.Small, flat and handy, this knife fits into any jacket or trouser pocket.The blade is made of C75 carbon steel. It features a stonewash finish. The matt surface effectively conceals signs of wear. Three knife makers – a brief introduction
Benjamin Laraud
In 2014, Benjamin Laraud came to Thiers to learn knife making from scratch. After working for GDD and Fontenille Pataud, he founded his brand Laraud Blades in 2023.
His first model, the L'Oegopsyde, is sleek, elegant and fluid like an octopus in motion. This was followed by the MagnaPinna, a slip joint knife with a smooth, rounded shape. Both knives are handmade and bear Benjamin's distinctive signature.
Benjamin Hée
Around five years ago, Benjamin Hée began forging at the foot of the Causse Noir. His first kitchen knives quickly sparked a passion that eventually became his craft. Today, he crafts handmade chef’s knives and folding knives, primarily with liner locks, and is currently expanding his collection to include slip-joint models. In doing so, he uses both his own hand-forged Damascus steel and high-quality Damascus steel from Achim Wirtz.
Every knife is unique and reflects the quality of the materials and craftsmanship.
Roland Lannier
In 2014, Roland Lannier left the Perceval forge and opened his own workshop in Thiers. His first model, ‘Why so serious’, immediately won a talent award.
This was followed by the Heeled Jack, an elegant slip joint knife. Roland Lannier also produces handmade table knives that are highly regarded in top-class gastronomy – each with distinctive handle materials and a personal touch.
Marie Taillardat
In 2013, Marie Taillardat began her training at Atelier Perceval and founded her own company, Coutellerie Marie Taillardat, in 2020.
Her first creation, the 1925 model, is a tribute to her grandfather and is still handmade today.
