Couperier-Coursolle Thiers knife brass

Thiers knives from the forge COUPERIER COURSOLLE

In addition to the Sujet models, the forge makes a few Thiers knives by hand. Only those who comply with the rules of the Thiers brotherhood are allowed to make a Thiers knife.

This very slim knife has brass handle scales. The resort of the fine Thiers has been guilloched by hand. The blade is made of 12C27 Sandvik stainless steel. This steel is hard to cut and easy to resharpen. The finish of the Thiers knife is matt.

Couperier-Cursolle

COUPERIER Cursolle cutlery in Thiers

It all began in the 17th century, when the so-called SUJETS were still made individually. Artists carved their handle scales with motifs of rural life or famous personalities in ivory or bone handle scales. For the rural population, however, these customised products were prohibitively expensive.

In 1902, Léon COURSOLLE presented a new type of knife. With the help of a new technique, he was able to produce the small pocket knives by stamping the motifs into brass handle scales using bronze moulds. This made it possible to make the knives accessible to a wider range of customers. He became the French creator of the SUJET knife theme.
